She is the youngest daughter of her father, H.C. Ray, who was the son of a former slave. He was also the founder of the Arkansas Agricultural Extension Service for Negroes. Her mother, Julia M. Ray was a sociologist and graduate of the Tuskegee Institute and Philander Smith College.
She registered to attend Central High School for her junior year of high school. After the school's of Little Rock shut down, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri to finish her senior year. Gloria acquired a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
