Elizabeth eckford
Birth: October 4, 1941
Elizabeth is one of six children. Her parents are Oscar and Birdie Eckford. Her mother taught at the segregated school for the blind and deaf while her father worked long nights as a maintenance worker for the Missouri Pacific's Railroad Little Rock station.
She came to school alone on September 4, 1957, but was supposed to arrive with the others. The reason for this was because her family had no phone, even though Daisy Bates volunteered to relay the news, she never go the chance to. Eckford was turned away by the National Guard twice before making her way through an angry crowd and sitting on a bus bench. She managed to escape to her mother's workplace.
After the closing of the public school's the following year, Eckford did not graduate, instead she completed correspondence and night classes to earn her credits. She got accepted by Knox College in Illinois, but returned to Little Rock soon after.
Eckford also served in the U.S. Army for five years, working a multitude of jobs such as pay clerk, information specialist, etc. She held many jobs throughout her life.
