Her father was a WWII veteran and worked as a brick mason while her mother was a secretary in the Office of Public Housing. Carlotta got her inspiration from Rosa Parks and her refusal to give up her seat and the Bus Boycott of Montgomery in 1955, she volunteered to be a part of the integration at Central High School as a sophomore.
After the shutdown of public schools, she, like Jefferson, came back and graduated in 1960. Next she attended Michigan State University for two years before moving with her family to Denver. Her father could not find work locally after the 1957 crisis and Colott
